Catholic Schools Week

posted Jan 23, 2012 7:05 PM by Brad Mohler   [ updated Jan 23, 2012 7:07 PM ]

Catholic Schools Week 2012 will begin January 29th. This year's theme — Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service
focuses on three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith – not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential And finally, Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship.

The third annual Diocese of Oakland Science Fair for middle school students will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012, and will be hosted by Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School at SJND's Anthony V. Aiello Science Center in Alameda.

Seventh and eighth grade students from all of the Diocesan grade schools are invited to participate. Local college and university science educators, as well as representatives from the tech industry and the Bay Area's scientific community, will serve as judges for the competition.

The winners will have the opportunity to compete in the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair.

The Science Fair competition will include science exhibits and demonstrations throughout the afternoon for students, parents and educators to enjoy.

Last year, the inaugural Diocese of Oakland Science Fair at SJND sent 30 middle school students on to the next level of competition at the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair.

More than 500 people attended the Science Fair on SJND's campus in February 2011. The 7th and 8th graders compet
ed in five different categories of science. This will be the third Diocese of Oakland Science Fair at SJND, where school leaders proposed the event because the high school has top-notch science facilities and wants to encourage students to pursue their passion for science.

“At SJND, we know science is vital to student learning and success in the 21st century, and we have invested in this program,” says SJND Principal Simon Chiu. “We are proud of the success of our school in the area of science education, with seven recent education, with seven of our recent valedictorians going on to study science at the university level.”

New Immunization Law for 2011-12 School Year

posted May 4, 2011 9:49 PM by Brad Mohler   [ updated May 5, 2011 8:47 AM by tgomez@csdo.org ]

A new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:

For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.
