2006 Outstanding Board Award

presented to Diocese of Oakland School Board

Each year the National Association of Boards, Commissions and Councils of Catholic Education of the National Catholic Education Association recognizes boards, commissions, or councils of Catholic education whose work is outstanding.  This award acknowledges outstanding work, encourages excellence, and provides models for other governance groups.

The Diocese of Oakland 13-member consultative board has been in existence for 28 years.  Its greatest strength are its focus on and commitment to the diocesan Catholic schools’ mission statement; the collaboration among the diocesan school board, committees, and staff; its mission-focused strategic planning; its board committee structures; it’s modeling of board effectiveness for local boards; and its program for training local boards.

Four special achievements in the past year were:

• Mission-based Strategic Planning
• Development of a Model for Elementary Consultative Boards
• Development of the Celebrating Leadership event honoring local board chairs
• Development of a comprehensive training program for local boards
